Who Would Better Protect Women's Rights?

'Binders full of women' effort predated Romney

Mitt Romney, referred to the MassGAP notebook in saying that he was sent "binders full of women," a comment which touched off a wave of social media parodies. BOSTON (AP) — Members of a coalition of Massachusetts women's groups on Wednesday disputed Mitt Romney's assertion that he requested the names of potential female candidates for high-level,state positions when he was elected governor.
"To be perfectly clear, Mitt Romney did not request those resumes," Jesse Mermell, a former executive director ofMassachusetts Government Appointments Project, told reporters during a conference call arranged by the Democratic Party.
Democrats arranged Wednesday's call to help blunt the Republican's efforts in the final weeks of the presidential campaign to appeal to female voters. Polls show women favoring President Barack Obama over Romney.
Romney, responding to a question during Tuesday night's presidential debate about equal pay and opportunities for women, said that in the process of assembling a cabinet as governor he was disappointed to find that most applicants were men. He said he then asked women's groups for help finding qualified female candidates.
"I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks,' and they brought us whole binders full of women," Romney said. The "binders full of women" remark sparked an instant wave of social media parodies of the phrase.
Mermell, a Democrat and town official in Brookline, Mass., said Romney did not request any names after his 2002 election. Instead, she said MassGAP approached Romney's team as part of its effort, begun before the election, to make sure that more women were appointed to senior positions in the new administration.
MassGAP describes itself as a nonpartisan coalition of women's groups interested in boosting the number of women in top state government jobs. The coalition said it approached the nominees of both major parties after the primaries, Romney and Democrat Shannon O'Brien, and secured commitments from both that, if elected, they would work with the organization to identify potential female candidates for senior-level positions.
Romney's campaign declined to respond to Mermell and referred questions to Kerry Healey, who was Romney's lieutenant governor. Healey said Romney went beyond the initial contact with MassGAP by reaching out to acquaintances in the business world and others to help meet his pledge to fill more administration posts with women.
Healey served as a liaison to MassGAP and reviewed the binders with resumes of potential candidates.
"Gov. Romney not only supports equal pay for equal work, but he goes beyond that by working to support women to reach the highest levels of government," Healey said.
Mermell questioned Romney's commitment to helping women get ahead in the workplace.
"The fact that he needed our help says everything you need to know about his true commitment to advance women in office," she said. Mermell added that it was "shocking that after 25 years of professional experience at the very highest level of corporate America, Mitt Romney needed our help."
In a statement, MassGAP said the number of women in senior-level posts climbed from about 30 percent to 42 percent during the first two years of Romney's administration.
A 2004 survey by the State University of New York found Massachusetts was first in the nation in the percentage of women in top state positions. MassGAP, however, noted the percentage later dropped to 25 percent in Romney's final two years in office.
"The way it worked was not quite the way it was described last night," said Ruth Bramson, who was hired as Romney's chief human resource officer after her resume was spotted in a binder. "He was half-right."
"Governor Romney was a tremendous proponent of bringing women into the state. There's no doubt about it," Bramson said. "But the impetus for this was not Governor Romney, but this other organization, MassGAP."

We do not need another president that we have no idea about what he is doing when he is behind close doors. We had that for 8 years and this country was almost completely destroyed. Early voting has already started in many states. It starts in Georgia on October 15 with Saturday early voting on October 27. There is not reason that anyone should not vote.

Where are all the Honey Bees??

David -
Here's the buzz: American honey bees are disappearing at an alarming rate and the government knows why.
Scientists say a pesticide called clothianidin, made by chemical giant Bayer, is strongly linked to the rapid decline in bee populations. When exposed to the chemical, bees get lost: they are literally unable to find their way home back to the hive and drop dead from exhaustion.
Susan Mariner uses her backyard garden to grow extra fruits and veggies for her family and teach her children where their food comes from -- and in the past few years, she's seen the decline in bees firsthand.
When Susan heard about the recent studies linking this specific chemical to the widespread death of the bees who pollinate our food, she started a petition on Change.org to get the chemical banned. Click here to sign Susan’s petition asking the Environmental Protection Agency to ban these bee-killing pesticides ASAP.
One-third of the U.S. food supply relies on honey bees. Without bees to pollinate crops, many essential (and favorite) foods are at risk, including apples, squash, tomatoes, strawberries, almonds, and even chocolate.
Several countries, including Germany and France, have already banned clothianidin. And after the bans, bee populations began to rise again.
But in the U.S., clothianidin is used on millions of acres of crops and American beekeepers report losses of up to 90% of their bees. Many worry that their hives won't survive another season. Sign Susan's petition urging the EPA to save the bees and immediately end the harmful pesticide's use.
Thanks for being a change-maker,
Corinne and the Change.org team

Having a backyard garden for more than 10 years I have also notice the lack of honeybees. If you like fresh fruits and vegetables then please help by signing this petition? David Laster

Owning Your Own Dreams-Take Ownership!!!

This a re-post:

What follows is advice on what it really takes to make your
dream a reality. It takes effort, and stick-to-it ness, but
you've got what it takes. Let the ideas below help you.

How to "Own" Your Own Dream
By Roy Vaden

It is a peculiar truth of life that we often do not
appropriately value the things we don't directly pay for.
One of the problems with credit is that it enables us to
have something that we "want" now even though we might not
really need it. And had we been forced to earn the money for
it first then we might have decided later that it's not
worth the money because it's not worth the  work we had to
put in to get it.

Unfortunately, many of us approach our dreams with the same
buying-on-credit philosophy that we use to buy our stuff. We
want to find a way to get them without having to pay for
them upfront. In other words we want the accolades, the
raises, the notoriety, the freedom and the status, but we’d
rather not have to put the work in for it up front in order
to get it. But even though we think that is what we want, it
ultimately doesn't satisfy.

A dream that is handed to you wouldn't be worth as much as
one you had to pay to own. It wouldn't have the same
significance, the same meaning, and it wouldn't represent
the same success. Even though we may not realize it, the
satisfaction of reaching the dream comes from having paid
the price in order to get it.

So if you have a dream-any dream-you don't want it on
"credit." That is, you don't want it "given" to you and you
don't need it to "come easy." You want to work for it, you
want to earn it, you want to pay the price for it. You want
to own it! My friend and author, Randy Gage, often says "You
should be the number one investor into your own dream."

There are three currencies you can use to invest in owning
your dream: time, money, and energy. If you have a dream
that you want, you can own it by investing any one of those
three things into it at any moment.

And as the "Buy-In Principle" of the Take the Stairs
methodology reminds us, "the more we have invested into
something the less likely we are to let it fail." So don't
wait for your dream to be given to you. Don't expect an
easier way for it to show up. Don't think it’d be better if
it just happened. Instead, start investing! Start paying the
price and you'll be amazed at the power you have once you
truly "own" your own dream.

See you in the "stairwell".

Jobs Are Being Created!!!

David --

On Friday, it was announced that we've hit our 23rd consecutive month of job growth. We've seen 3.7 million private-sector jobs created during that time.

Still, you're probably familiar with one of the GOP's favorite go-to lies: bashing the President's jobs record.

Mitt Romney's called him a job destroyer, claiming that the President "has not created any new jobs." Newt Gingrich's taken it a step further, saying, "the President has now spent three years proving that he kills jobs in energy, he kills jobs in manufacturing, he kills jobs in virtually every part of American life."

We've had about enough of that. And we're pushing back.

The folks over at the Obama campaign put together a jobs chart, which lays out the past four years of monthly jobs numbers, from under President Bush in December 2007 up until this past month.

Check it out, then pass it on:

-------------ORIGINAL MESSAGE-------------
From: Stephanie Cutter, BarackObama.com
Subject: Seen our jobs chart?

Patrick --

On Friday, the new monthly jobs numbers came out. We've officially had 23 consecutive months of private-sector job growth, and seen 3.7 million private-sector jobs created under this President.

In response to the news, Mitt Romney cynically claimed President Obama has "prevented a true economic recovery." He's even falsely said President Obama "has not created any new jobs," and told ABC News earlier this year that the President has "lost 2 million jobs."

The Republican candidates are banking on people not knowing the truth about the President's record.

We need to get the facts out there -- so we put together this chart where you can Facebook it, tweet it, or send it on a postcard for free.

Click here to share it to your friends and family who need to see it -- this literally takes two minutes.

Help spread the word about the President's jobs record.

Tens of thousands of supporters have already shared this jobs chart online. Now, we want to make sure it's out there in the offline world, too -- in people's hands, on their refrigerators, or on a message board in a public library. You can share it either way.

We still have a long way to go, and this month's numbers are just a snapshot in time. But stats like this shouldn't be missed.

Make sure people know the truth about the President's record on jobs -- spread the word to your friends today:
